Inmate Search in Vermont

Thirty-three states provide a free online search for offenders within their jurisdiction for the public. Each state sets up and maintains its own independent web site. Therefore, variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented on each inmate. Various state laws determine some of these differences, as well as which information is available for public viewing.

Some databases will contain information on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include inmates who are deceased, escaped, or no longer resident in the correctional system.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with all browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell because the missing information is minimal.

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of Vermont, use the following link: http://www.doc.state.vt.us/offender/. This directs you to the Vermont Department of Corrections offender locator web page.

The page is labeled Vermont Agency of Human Services with the subheading “Offender Locator.” In the center of the page, an option is provided to select the font size for viewing the information. If you select the “A,” the information will appear in the default setting. If you select the “A+” setting, then the information will appear in a large font size.

On the left hand side of the page, a menu of live links is provided. The selections include: home, about us, facilities and offices, planning and research, community and restorative justice, volunteer opportunities, victim services, education and corrections, programs, Vermont offender work programs, custody and supervision, careers in corrections, contact us, glossary, and correctional links.

In the center of the page, underneath the subheading “Offender Locator,” you will see the date that the website data was last updated. Directly below this, two search boxes are located. The top entry is for the offender’s last name and the second entry is for the offender’s first name. You may elect to conduct your search using the first and last name, the last name only, or only the first name.

Once you have entered your data, select the search link. Your results will be generated in a few seconds. The results to your search are presented in a grid like chart. At the top of the chart, the following headings appear: last, first, date of birth, site, caseworker, and telephone.

In the column for the site, the entire address for the facility will be listed along with a phone number. The caseworker’s name will be listed as a live link. If you click on this link, a “compose” new message box will appear with the caseworker’s e-mail address included in it.

All of the results will be presented in one chart. Depending on the number of matches, you may need to scroll through the results. If you conduct a search for which no known inmate exists, then the results will simply generate a page with the headings for the search result chart and no data.

This site provides only basic information on the offenders. Additionally, it does not list aliases. Nor does it indicate how many matches were obtained with your search criteria. The results page contains the search boxes at the top, directly above the result chart. If you decide to do another search, you simply enter the data and select search.
