Over half of the states provide free searches for state offenders within their jurisdiction through a website designed for use by the public. Each state that participates in this program maintains its own website independently through their Department of Corrections. Variations often exist in the design of the site, the complexity of the search criteria, the information presented for public viewing, and the availability of other related information. State laws determine some of the parameters of the website. North Dakota does not provide online search features.

Some databases will contain information only on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include information on inmates who are no longer resident in the correctional system or who are deceased, escaped, or released. North Dakota does not use the Vinelink service.

If you do not have all of the requested information, you should include as much identifying information as possible. For example, many people have the same first and last name, so include a middle name or initial. If the inmate has any identifying tattoos or scars, they can be included as well to help narrow the search in order to provide the correct information on an inmate. If you know the particular crime for which the individual was convicted, include that information.
