Inmate Search in New York

Searching for inmates online is possible in 33 states. The State Department of Corrections in these states is responsible for maintaining the database for their state. The participating states provide an independent website where individuals may search for inmates using a partial name, a full name, a birth date, or incarceration number.

The database of inmates may include those who have recently been released from prison until the system is updated. Several states maintain the inmate’s information in their database even after they have been discharged from the facility. The New York Department of Correctional Services maintains the information concerning discharged inmates online in order to promote an accurate picture as to why and when the inmate was released.

This service is useful to gather specific information on inmates. It is intended to make information on the status and location of inmates in the New York Department of Correctional Services available to interested individuals. This is a free service provided to law enforcement agencies, as well as to the general public, in the interest of public safety.

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of New York, use the following link: http://nysdocslookup.docs.state.ny.us/kinqw00.

This will direct you to the New York State Department of Correctional Services online site for inmate lookups. The subheading for this page is “Inmate Population Information Search.” Underneath this subheading, it explains that you should conduct your search using only one of the methods, either by the inmate’s name, by the inmate’s name and birth date, or by the inmate’s DIN (Department ID) or NYSID (New York State ID Number.) The NYSID is typically for use by law enforcement officials. However, if you have this number available, you can use it to look up the information.

Several links are available on this page to provide answers to questions that may arise. Technically, each link takes you to the same page on information, but in different locations.

The first link is labeled “More on Name Search.” If you click on this, it will take you to information that presents an explanation on the various types of results that occur with correctly spelled names and incorrectly spelled names with and without birth dates.

The second link is labeled “More Detailed Instructions.” If you click on this, it will take you to instructions concerning the site.

The third link is labeled “Who’s Listed Here.” If you click on this, it will take you to an explanation on exactly what type of inmates are listed and why.

The fourth link is labeled “About Youthful Offenders.” If you click on this, it will take you to an explanation about what constitutes a youthful offender. Moreover, it explains the confidentiality of the records of youthful offenders and why you will not find them available for public perusal.

The fifth link is labeled “Hours of Operation for Inmate Lookup.” If you click on this, it will take you to information that clearly delineates the hours of operation. This is a 24 hour service with a few minor time outs for maintenance of the site.

Once you enter the information that you are submitting for your search, click the button labeled “submit.” After a few seconds, you will either receive results or no results. Either way, you are directed to a page with the subheading “Name Search Results.” The date is indicated next to the subheading. Directly underneath the subheading, instructions are presented that indicate for the user to click on the DIN in order to view additional information on the inmate.

Directly underneath this will be a list four of the names that the search generated. The information is presented in a grid like chart along with the inmate’s DIN, sex, birth date, status, facility, and race/ethnicity. If the inmate has been released, no facility will be listed. Below this information is a button labeled “Next 4 Inmate Names.” If you click this, it will direct you to the next four names.

If you click on the DIN number, you will be directed to a page labeled “Inmate Information.” A grid like chart labeled “Identifying and Location Information” appears. Most of these are live links that will direct you to an explanation or definition of the term.

The following information is presented in the chart for the inmate:
DIN
Inmate name
Sex
Date of birth
Race/ethnicity
Custody status
Housing releasing facility
Date received (original)
Date received (current)
Admission type
County of commitment
Latest release date/type (released inmates only)

Beneath this chart is another smaller chart that contains a list of the crimes of conviction. Only four crimes can be listed in this chart. Therefore, if the inmate committed and was convicted for more than four crimes, only the four most serious crimes will be shown.

Below this information is another chart that details the sentence terms and release dates of the inmate. Several different types of release are listed on the left hand side of the page. Each of these is a live link that will direct you to an explanation or definition of the term. On the right hand side, any available information on release dates will be listed in terms of dates, exact years, or some form of maximum, minimum, or none.

Even if you receive the information that no inmate bearing the name you entered was located, a list of inmates whose names are similar in spelling is generated for you to consider.

At both the top and bottom of the presented information are links that will return you to the inmate lookup page. Additionally, links to the privacy policy, contact us, and press release information are available.
