Inmate Search in Maryland

Thirty-three states provide a free search for offenders within their jurisdiction through website use by the public. Each state is part of the “Free Inmate Locator.” Each state maintains its own independent website. Therefore, variations exist in the design of the site, the search criteria, and the information presented for perusal. State laws, such as the Freedom of Information Act, determine the type of information that is available to the public.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly with certain browsers. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing. If you encounter this difficulty, consider using a computer at a public library to conduct your searches. In some cases, you won’t be able to tell that the site is not functioning properly because the missing information is minimal. In fact, information at the bottom of the page indicates that Maryland’s website is best used with the following browser versions: Internet Explorer 5.0, Mozilla Firefox 1.0, Opera 7.54, or Netscape 6.

Some inmate locator databases contain information on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that state. Other sites also include inmates who are deceased, escaped, or no longer resident in the correctional system. However, in the state of Maryland, inmates who are no longer in custody, either due to release or an escape, are not listed in the database..

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of Maryland, use the following link: http://www.dpscs.state.md.us/inmate/.

This directs you to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services inmate locator search page. In addition to pictures of the governor and lieutenant governor near the top of the page, several lines of text explain the site in brief. In fact, it is explained that the site specifically informs the public of the housing location of inmates who are committed to the custody of the Commissioner of Correction.

It further explains that the inmates who are listed are housed at the Division of Correction facilities, Patuxent Institution, or at the Division of Pretrial and Detention Service facilities. Not all short sentenced inmates are included in the inmate locator database.

Plus, several links are available at the top of the page including about DPSCS, online services, public services, public information, victim services, rehabilitation services, employment, and locations.

In the top center of the page, under the subheading “inmate locator,” two search boxes, labeled first name and last name, are present. Once you have entered your data, select search. Your results will be generated to an identical page with the exception of the new information that is presented in a chart format. The chart is very simple and only includes three columns of information: a number that shows where the inmate is on the list, the inmate’s last name, first name, and middle name, and the inmate’s date of birth.

Each inmate’s name is a live link that provides additional information on the inmate, specifically the inmate’s DOC ID and the holding facility where the inmate is located. The address and telephone number for the facility is included as well. The name of the facility is a live link that will provide additional details concerning the facility including: the visiting hours for the various populations housed at the facility and basic information regarding visitation restrictions and guidelines.
