Inmate Search in Illinois

Thirty-three states provide a free online search for offenders within their jurisdiction for the public. Each state maintains its own web site independently. Therefore, variations exist in the design and look of the site, the search criteria that is used to locate the inmates, and the information presented for viewing on the website. State laws may determine what information is available for the public to see.

It is important to note that the website may not work properly when certain browsers are used. In fact, the web pages may partially load onto your computer screen, but integral parts may be missing from the page. If you encounter this difficulty on your computer, you may want to consider using a computer at a public library to complete your searches.

Some databases will contain information only on inmates who are currently incarcerated, paroled, or on probation within that particular state. Other sites include inmates who are deceased, escaped, or released from the correctional system.

To acquire access to the database for inmates in the state of Illinois, use the following link: http://www.idoc.state.il.us/subsections/search/default.asp.

This directs you to the Illinois Department of Correction offender search page. On the left hand side of the page, a menu of agency links is available and includes links for the following: director, department overview, mission statement, inmate search, sex registrant search, facilities, visitation rules, IDOC news, reports & stats, jobs, industries, victim services, correctional conferences, wanted fugitives, attorney FAQ, FAQ, contact us, employee benefits information, Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, and IDOC home.

In the center of the page, an explanation and guide to the inmate search is provided. Three methods are available for searching the inmate database in Illinois: last name, IDOC number, and birth date.

Searching by the inmate’s last name has three options. You can search using the last name only. You can search using the last name and the first name with a comma separating the two names. You can also search using a partial spelling of the last name.

Searching with the IDOC number requires that you have the complete IDOC number available. The IDOC number may include a letter and five numbers.

Searching by the birth date requires that you have the entire birth date available, including month, day, and year.

If you are having difficulty using the search function with this website, you may contact the Illinois Department of Corrections directly using the following telephone number: 217-522-2666.

Before you enter your data into the search box, you must select which of the three methods you will be using. Only one search box is available, and you must be sure to enter the data in the format indicated on the site. Use the drop down menu to select the method.

Once you have entered your data, select the Inmate Search button. Your results will be generated in a few seconds and will appear in a small box on a new page. Directly below the inmate results, it will state how many results were generated. The inmates will be listed from left to right by their IDOC number, their birth date, and their name including last name, first name, and middle initial.

In order to view more information on an inmate, you need to highlight an inmate and select “query a highlighted inmate.” A new page is generated that displays a photograph of the inmate at the top, if available, as well as specific information on the inmate below the photograph.

The data is displayed in a series of sections. The first section bears the title “vitals.” It includes: date of birth, weight, hair, sex, height, race, and color of the eyes. Directly below this is a section that lists any tattoos, scars, or other marks. Directly below is a section titled “Admission/Release/Discharge information. This includes: the custody date, projected parole date, tentative discharge date, and discharge from parole date.

Directly below this is a chart that contains the sentencing information on the inmate. This includes: class of the offense, count of the offense, offense name, custody date, sentence, county, and sentence discharge information. This is included for each offence for which the inmate received a sentence.

If anyone using the site has any questions or comments concerning the accuracy of the information, they are directed to contact:
